Know a Title from a Registration and Be Sure of What You Are Getting! IMPORTANT! DO NOT BE FOOLED! A Registration is NOT a Title. European Ownership Documentation & Import Papers can be a REAL NIGHTMARE to turn into a U.S. Title! Be SURE you get a REAL U.S. TITLE on ANY imported vehicle! Make Certain that Your Documents have the Seller's Name On The Ownership Papers! Otherwise you have LITTLE RECOURSE should something go wrong. THINK ABOUT IT! !!! IMPORTANT FRAUD ALERT !!! There are shortages of many of the most popular vehicles which are LEGAL for importation into the United States!! There are some unscrupulous importers dealing in vehicles which have been imported ILLEGALLY by means of altering the Date of Manufacture BEFORE SHIPMENT TO THE UNITED STATES and/or Importing Vehicles Newer than 25 Years Old as "Off-Road Use Only", laundering the Title and producing documentation from a State such as Georgia (which does not require titles for vehicles 15 years of age or older... for these they require a 'bill of sale' for which they will issue a registration and give you plates!) From such minimal documentation, a vehicle transferred to another State... such as Colorado... with a Georgia registration, can then be Titled with a REAL TITLE... which, in turn, is then accepted for Titling in another State... and so the FRAUD Goes Merrily On Until It Becomes YOUR Problem! REMEMBER: IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NO EXCUSE! LEGAL PINZGAUERS ARE 25 YEARS OLD OR OLDER AT THE TIME OF IMPORTATION. LEGAL PINZGAUER VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS SHOULD BE 7 DIGITS LONG AND SHOULD START WITH EITHER 575 FOR 4X4 OR 475 FOR 6X6. THE INFO ON THE DATA PLATE SHOULD BE HAND/OR DIE STAMPED, NOT PRINTED WITH PAINT OR INK. THE DATA PLATE SHOULD LOOK 25 YEARS OLD. IF THE WIRING HARNESS IS SHEATHED IN BLACK AND/OR HAS BLACK CONNECTORS, THIS COULD INDICATE A 'NEWER THAN LEGAL' PINZGAUER. EVEN IF YOURS DOES NOT MATCH ANY OF THESE PARAMETERS, YOU MAY STILL HAVE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM ON YOUR HANDS!! APART FROM CONFISCATION AND SUMMARY DEMOLITION OF YOUR PINZGAUER BY FEDERAL AND/OR STATE AUTHORITIES... SHOULD YOU BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, YOU COULD VERY WELL FIND THAT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY CAN, AND VERY LIKELY WILL, WITHDRAW COVERAGE IF YOUR VEHICLE IS BEING OPERATED ON US ROADWAYS FRAUDULENTLY... Be Certain that you are dealing with a Real Licensed Automobile Dealer and not some Private Importer, Wholesaler and/or Overglorified Repair Center!! Ask to see the State Issued Dealer License AND Sales Tax License!! If you make interrogatories along these lines and you do not get satisfactory answers... BUYER BEWARE!! There are probably some very good reasons why the local regulatory agencies are unwilling to license these persons thus prompting them to operate in a less that above-board manner. It is expensive and requires some level of certification to be Licensed & Bonded to operate LEGALLY in this industry.
